KABUL.

Presidential Advisor on Health Dr. Faizullah Kakar told Pajhwok Afghan News the drop in cholesterol and metabolism levels during the fasting month is useful for cardiac and neurological system.

“If too much food is eaten after Ramadan, slow metabolism can send the eater’s cholesterol level soaring besides enhancing his/her weight,” Kakar said. “My advice: Eat less, especially sugary and oily food for a week at least.”

Food should be eaten four or five times a week after Eid, instead of three times a day, he said.

“Stomach works slowly during Ramadan and you eat much, pressure increases on your stomach and leads to digestive problems,” said Assistant Professor Bashir Ahmad Noormal, the director of the National Institute of Public Health.

Cholesterol and sugar levels in blood decline during Ramadan, but abrupt food intake during Eid days could jack them up.

Generally speaking, an eating spree is not a good habit. Oil and sweets, including cakes, cookies, should be eaten less to avoid stomach problems.

“Earlier, people would die of infectious diseases. But a recent survey reveals that most of deaths among the elderly occur due to cancer, heart diseases and diabetes,” he explains.

Research shows eating too much and taking in a lot of sugar, salt and fat is one of the common reasons behind many diseases.
