KABUL): The Right and Justice Party on Wednesday asked the government not to use security problems as an excuse for not distributing new voter and computerised identity cards ahead of the presidential elections scheduled to take place next year.
The opposition party’s executive body member, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, told a news conference in Kabul that government’s efforts at ensuring transparency in the upcoming polls were inadequate. He said the new cards were crucial to preserving the vote’s credibility,
“President Hamid Karzai should honour his commitment by bringing drastic reforms to the electoral system,” the former inteior minister said, linking a fair vote to improved security across the country.
He stressed the amended electoral law should be approved and the government must meet demands of the national assembly, opposition parties and civil society institutions.
Atmar said a real independent election and complaints commission could help reform the electoral system, hoping the government would soon explain its position on the issue to the nation.
He said his party welcomed President Karzai’s decision of not jumping into the presidential race for a third time and not staying in office beyond his current term as president.
Karzai has said he would be happy with the tag of an ex-president.
