JALALABAD (PAN): Some commuters and taxi drivers in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday accused security officials manning a check post on the Torkham-Jalalabad highway of forcing them into paying illegal money.
Driver Mohammad Asif told Pajhwok Afghan News the police officials sought 200 Pakistani rupees from him to avoid a thorough going search of his vehicle.
He said police created problems for drivers if they refused to give money. “Police take a lot of time searching different parts of a vehicle, they open one place and then another as part of their tactics to force for money”, he said.
He also said the police allowed vehicles smuggling medicines and food items to the country from outside against payments.
A man carrying cartons of medicines and sitting in a passenger car said if he did not give the police money they would not allow him to proceed and would inform customs officials to confiscate his medicines. He said he had to pay bribes at six points on his way from Torkham to Jalalaabad.
Police chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Sharif Amen said 15 security guards, including a commander, had been transferred from the check point in the Barikab area following allegations of accepting bribes.
