KABUL member on Wednesday accused the Kandahar governor of stashing $35 million abroad, but a gubernatorial spokesman rejected the allegation as baseless.
Parliamentarian Mohammad Naeem Hamidzai Lalai told the lower house that Governor Toryalai Weesa had sent to Canada the money he had amassed through illegal means.
The lawmaker quoted the governor as saying that he had sold his land in Arghandab district and residence in Kandahar City. He wondered how the governor was paid a million dollars for half an acre of land in an area where one acre did not cost more than $20,000.
“He (the governor) has gotten the money through land-grab and fund embezzlement in Kandahar and has transferred it to Canada,” the MP insisted. According to Weesa, the 4.5 acre land sale earned him $9 million, while the house was sold for $25.5 million.
Lalai urged the assembly to send a delegation to Kandahar to investigate this issue and other problems of residents. He claimed having evidence that the governor had transferred the money abroad via the Kandahar airport through his relatives six months ago.
But Ahmad Javed Faisal, the governor’s spokesman, denied that Weesa had either sold his property or stashed any money abroad. He said the allegation was driven by the lawmaker’s personal grudges against the governor.
