President Asif Ali Zardari told a joint sitting of parliament for a record sixth time late on Monday night: “We are seeking to improve relations with all countries in the region.”
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had already given the foreign policy guideline. he said, making it clear the goal of prosperity and development could not be achieved without regional peace.
Pakistan would not allow the use of its soil for terrorist acts against any other country, Zardari promised, called for a two-pronged strategy combining talks and the use of force for dealing with the menace.
Militancy and terrorism posed the “greatest threat” to Pakistan’s security, acknowledged the president, who hastened to add: “The nation is united against militancy. We need strong leadership to overcome the threat.”
He also denounced the US drone campaign in Pakistan’s tribal region as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty and international law. The strikes were counterproductive and unacceptable, the president remarked.
