KABUL have not agreed to the renaming of their political office in Qatar and removal of the movement’s flag, their spokesman in Doha said.
Although both have been removed, the move has infuriated President Hamid Karzai, who said the use of the formal name and flag made the office look like an embassy rather than a bureau for peace talks.
Suhail Shaheen, a member of the Taliban office in Qatar, rejected as baseless an Associated Press report that the group had agreed to remove the flag and the sign.
“It’s a baseless and fabricated allegation. I must state we have not even conducted an interview with anyone in the past few days,” he said in a statement.
As US Special Representative James Dobbins met President Karzai in Kabul, Shaheen made clear the Taliban’s stance on the flag and the name of the Islamic Emirate remained unchanged.
