LASHKARGAH (PAN): Four girls were killed on Thursday when one of them stepped on a landmine on the outskirts of Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, where a policewoman succumbed to her bullet injuries in hospital.
The girls, aged between eight and 12 years, were on their way home fetching water in jerry canes from a natural stream when the blast took place in the Lashkari Bazaar area, said the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak.
Belonging to one family, the girls were attending a wedding. A police official said the body of one of the victims had been badly charred.
Separately, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at a policewoman, injuring her and her son-in-law. Both were taken to hospital, but the policewoman, Islam Bibi, died of her wounds, according to Zwak.
Elsewhere, an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier was killed in a bomb blast in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, on Thursday. The blast occurred near a military base in the fourth district.
