KABUL President Asif Ali Zardari’s chief security officer was killed along with two other people during a bomb attack in the port city of Karachi on Wednesday, media reported.
The explosion rocked Karachi’s congested New Town neighbourhood, killing Bilal Sheikh, the chief security officer of the president and well as an active worker of the Pakistan People’s Party.
According to the Dawn newspaper, the Bilawal House, the residence of President Zardari in Karachi, confirmed Sheikh’s death. Rescue teams and security personnel reached the site. A state of emergency was declared at local hospitals.
Two police officials were also killed in the roadside blast in the Jamshed Quarters area. The explosives planted beneath Sheikh’s bullet-proof went off when near a religious school. Nine people were injured.
Hours before the blast, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to eradicate terrorism from the country. At a meeting in Islamabad, he held consultations with tribal lawmakers on a new national security policy.
