KABUL after the 2014 pullout of foreign combat troops.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, in a telephone call to Karzai, desired to meet the Afghan leader on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September.
President Karzai hailed Australia as a great friend of the Afghan people and appreciated the assistance it had extended to the war-torn nation in recent years.
Separately, People’s Republic of China Ambassador Xu Feihong called on Karzai at the Presidential Palace. The president lauded China as an important neighbour and a strategic ally.
Good relations between Afghanistan and China were in the interest of both countries, he believed, wishing the ambassador good luck in his assignment.
The diplomat said the Chinese people were supportive of an independent, sovereign, peaceful and stable Afghanistan. He also promised continued aid to the Afghans.
