JALALABAD (PAN): Civilians, insurgents and security personnel suffered casualties during an operation that sparked gun-battles in the Hesarak district of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Monday.
Four militants were killed and several others wounded and their weapons and ammunitions seized during the operation in the Nawar area on Sunday afternoon, Nangarhar deputy police chief, Col. Masoom Khan Hashmi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He had no exact figures for the injured insurgents, but said two Afghan National Army troops were also wounded.
But a doctor at the district health clinic, wishing anonymity, said they had been delivered three dead bodies of civilians and two injured persons. He said the injured were being treated and were in stable condition.
The doctor said a military post had been established on the second floor of the clinic, creating numerous problems for them. He appealed to the authorities to remove the post from the clinic’s building.
Resident Sharif Khan said both insurgents and security men suffered casualties during the nighttime clashes.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed 10 ANA troops were injured during the clashes that left three civilians dead.
The Ministry of Defence on Friday said the operation in Hesarak and Azra district of central Logar province had been concluded after the death of 200 insurgents in the two bordering towns.
The ministry said security forces were currently chasing fugitive elements and they would remain there until the area was cleared.
Elsewhere, a Taliban commander was killed along with another fighter during a clash with police in central Uruzgan province, an official said on Monday.
The overnight clash took place in the Marabad area of Tirinkot, the provincial capital, police spokesman Farid Ayel told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Identifying the slain rebel leader as Gulab Khan, he said his two more comrades were captured alive in injured condition.
One motorcycle, hand grenades, mines and four AK-47s and bullets were recovered from the insurgents, he said.
