KABUL-linked violence could not go together.
At a meeting in Islamabad on Friday, government and Taliban representatives denounced the latest suicide attack in Karachi, which killed 13 police commandos.
In a joint statement, a four-member government committee made clear if the Taliban continued Karachi-like attacks, “peace dialogue cannot go ahead”.
A member of the government team, Rustam Shah Mohmand, said after the meeting: “We have told them in no-nonsense terms that if the TTP continues attacks, there is absolutely no chance of the peace dialogue going forward.”
The Taliban committee agreed to a ceasefire suggestion, but urged the government to avoid any act that could adversely affect the process or cause unnecessary provocation.
The government side reiterated its stance that only after an effective end to anti-peace activities by the TTP, further steps would be taken to create an environment conducive to talks.
“The Taliban should forthwith publicly announce cessation of all hostile acts that undermine peace and implementation of such pronouncement must be ensured,” said a joint statement.
