Interference in elections not to be allowed: IEC

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has said steps have been expedited against officials allegedly favouring some presidential candidates.

  Head of IEC Secretariat Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhel told journalists in eastern Kunar province some officials were found attended candidates gathering formally.

After thorough investigations against those involved government officials, the outcome would be made public after sharing with President Hamid Karzai.

The officials attended the public meetings of elections’ contenders had breached the elections laws and the presidential decree, he said, adding the IEC would launch a probe into the incident.

He expressed optimism presidential elections would be concluded in the first round but the IEC was all ready to conduct the elections in peaceful environment in both cases.

“The IEC has approved to use two colours during the ballot process for voters in a move to ensure transparency in the elections. The colour will not be washed out from voters’ fingers for three days,” he added.

Referring to ballot papers and voters’ cards, he said the ballot papers had been printed abroad which were of high quality and could not be duplicated.

He reiterated no one, including officials, candidates and foreigners would be allowed to interfere in the elections process.
