HERAT CITY: (Pajhwok): The tomb of Prince Abdullah, one of the two historic graves that sit on the main road just south of the Musalla Complex in the western city of Herat, is being reconstructed at a cost of $400,000, an official said on Wednesday.
Built in the late 15th century, the complex contains the tombs of two princes, Abdullah and Qasim, who died in the 8th century. Abdullah’s tomb’s exteriors are plain fired brick with ogee portal arches and the interiors are richly decorated with tiling – probably the best surviving tilework from medieval Herat.
Herat Information and Culture Director Ariya Raufian told Pajhwok Afghan News reconstruction work on Prince Abdullah’s tomb would be officially launched on Wednesday.
He said the US had provided $340,000 for the project and the remaining $60,000 by the Heart Cultural Legacy Foundation. The grave would be constructed in line with the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNSCO)’s engineering designs, he informed.
The project would follow the reconstruction of Prince Qasim’s tomb, he said, adding the US had promised assistance for that project as well.
