KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Construction work on an important bridge in the Zakhukhel locality of southeastern Khost province has been completed and the facility officially opened on Friday.
Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi, who inaugurated the bridge, told Pajhwok Afghan News the bridge would facilitate thousands of dwellers living on both sides of the Lakno stream to travel to the provincial capital without facing any problem.
During rainy seasons and flooding, Naeem recalled people had to face a lot of problems because their areas would remain cut off from Khost City until the natural disaster receded.
A large number of senior officials, local elders and common people attended the bridge inauguration amid jubilation.
The governor said the project cost nearly $1 million funded by the World Bank (WB). The bridge, he said, having 140 metres length and eight metres width, took 11 months to complete by a local construction company.
The bridge construction had been a long-standing demand of local people, he said, adding the facility would help resolve problems the area residents faced earlier.
He said demands for bridges in this strategic province had been met to a great extent and that he would strive to launch similar projects wherever needed.
Eng. Mamoor Shah, the rural development director, said local officials and the governor had extended all out support to completing the project and he would work to initiate more such schemes.
