KABUL) said on Friday that 180 teams, working in two shifts, would resume the presidential election audit on the third day of Eidul Fitr.
IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor, addressing a news conference in Kabul, asked Afghan and international observers, as well as representatives of the two presidential runners to be present on the occasion.
Yusuf Nuristani, the commission’s chairman, had earlier hinted at the creation of 100 teams that would audit 1,000 ballot boxes on a daily basis.
But Noor said: “About 180 teams will audit the ballot boxes, with each shift having 90 teams. Another 20 teams are going to be added tomorrow, taking the total number to 200.”
The commission wanted the presidential candidate to nominate 100 people each for monitoring the process, said the spokesman, who urged international observers to watch the process closely.
Of the 22,828 ballot boxes, 13,619 have been transported from different provinces to the IEC headquarters in Kabul.
All ballot boxes had been transported from Badghis to Kabul. And votes from Farah have been transferred to Herat before being taken to the central capital.
“The ballots are transported by NATO-led troops with the support of the UN, in the presence of both candidates’ agents and under IEC supervision,” he explained.
To oversee the process, so far 883 national and international observers have registered their names with the commission.
Based on a proposal from the world body, a nine-member commission, including candidate representatives and United Nations’ officials, is holding talks on technical aspects of the recount process.
He said progress had been made in some areas, disagreements between the representatives of the candidates persisted on certain issues. The commission has agreed on resuming the audit on the third day of Eid.
