No joint communiqué after Wales summit: NATO

KABUL said the alliance would not issue a joint communiqué on Afghanistan at the end of the Wales summit scheduled to be kicked off from September 4.

Ambassador Maurits R Jochems told journalists in Kabul that the two-day NATO summit was scheduled to run from September 4-5 in Wales, United Kingdom.  

The Wales Summit would discuss a range of issues pertaining to political and security situation, including the end of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the planned Resolute Support (RSM) mission to train, advise and assist of Afghan security forces.

In addition, the latest developments in Iraq, Ukraine, and defense spending would also be discussed  

Jochems said leaders and representatives from around 60 countries would attend the summit. Besides, NATO leaders and representatives of Central Asian states, Pakistan has also been invited to participate.

During the course of summit, he noted that NATO and ISAF member states would reiterate their resolve in connection with the financial assistance to the Afghan security forces.

Earlier, in a NATO summit held in Chicago, the international community had pledged $4.1 billion in aid to Afghan security forces annually. But Finance Minister Hazrat Umar Zakhilwal informed expenses had surged following transfer of security responsibilities to Afghan security forces.

He said Afghanistan would request $6 billion in aid in the Wales summit for Afghan security forces.
