KABUL needed international assistance in the fight against narcotics — a top priority of the new government.
About 360 kilograms of heroin, 29 kilograms of morphine, 120 kg of opium, over 74 kg of hashish, 162 kg of solid chemical products, 249 litres of liquid chemical, 750 kg of refined heroin, 16 liters of alcoholic beverages, more than 94 kg of raisin, 495 liters of acid and six litres of beer were set alight.
Yar Mohammad Hussein, a prosecutor with the Criminal Justice Task Force, stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation with Afghanistan in the fight against drugs. He said the 21 tonnes of narcotics torched in Deh Sabz area had been seized over the past 9 months in Kabul.
Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics Lt. Gen. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi urged the authorities to accord due priority to combating drugs.
“The capacity of counternarcotics police should be commensurate with the challenge, because it requires diligence and cooperation,” he remarked. In the last two years, opium cultivation increased due to security transition and elections.
Currently three million are involved in poppy cultivation, production and trafficking in the country, where 2,500 personnel are fighting the scourge. The deputy minister said the number was inadequate, given the enormity of the challenge.
