KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of newly elected provincial council (PC) members from Faryab, Jawzjan, Badakhshan and Nimroz provinces on Wednesday took oath, pledging to translate their promises into action.

In the April election, 15 candidates won in Faryab, 15 in Jawzjan, as many in Badakhshan and nine in Nimroz.

Introducing the new PC members, Faryab Governor Mohammadullah Batash said they should be trained in accordance with the council rules. “The PC members should oversee the work of government offices and use of funds.”

A newly elected member, Abdul Wahab, promised to implement his campaign pledges. They would serve the people in accordance with the law and cooperate with the provincial authorities on important issues.

Jawzjan PC members also took oath. One of them, Maulvi Abdulhai Hayat, said the new PC was different from the previous one because most of the incoming members were educated people.

“The previous members did not give us the right to implement development projects, but we are hopeful the new PC will cooperate in implementing welfare projects and sharing people’s problems with the central government,” he remarked.

A female PC member, Halima Sadaf, said: “We have good experience of the previous council; we would try to solve people’s problems. But I request the people not to demand services from us that we do not have the power to deliver.”

Also on Wednesday, Nimroz Governor Amir Mohammad Akhunzada said the new members were educated people who could better solve people’s problems. “The government would take advantage of your advice and suggestions,” he told the newly elected members.

PC member Niamatullah said they planned to hold a huge gathering to listen to people’s problems and then share them with the government for solution.

Badakhshan Governor Shah Waliullah Adib also administered oath to new PC members. He hailed the performance of the previous council and asked the new members to cooperate with the government.

Gulalai Akbari, who has won for the third time a seat on Badakhshan council, said they would try to serve the people and avoid mistakes committed in the past.

Her colleague Ziauddin Wasiq also said to serve the masses who had voted for him in the April 5 elections. They would go flat out to come up to public expectations, he promised.
