KABUL would vote on Monday to elect their senatorial representatives (one per province) for four year terms, the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) said.
One-third (34) members of the 102-member Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament are elected by provincial councils to represent their provinces. The age of a senatorial candidate should be 35 years or above.
A statement issued by IDLG said the Independent Election Commission (IEC) had been informed about the voting.
Under the election law, the IEC is responsible for all elections by provincial council members, with IDLG playing the role of an observer.
Saeed Ahmad Khamosh, who heads the IDLG’s solidarity committee, said after electing their Senate representatives, the provincial councils would elect members of administrative delegations.
He hoped the elections of senatorial candidates would take place in a peaceful environment as the voting would take provincial councils a step forward in electing their administrative boards.
The IDLG official urged media organisations to monitor the election process and share their opinions and observations with local IEC offices.
One-third (34) members of Senate are elected by district councils. However, the district council elections have not been conducted over the past eight years.
Each provincial council also selected one of its elected members to temporarily hold seats in the house until district council elections are held.
Another one-third (34) members of the Meshrano Jirga are nominated by the president for five-year terms.
Half of the presidential nominees have to be women tribe.
The new government has promised to hold district council elections simultaneously with the next parliamentary elections.
