KABUL Council, Sheikh Azizullah Najafi, was shot dead on Thursday by unknown gunmen in western Herat province, police said.
Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at Najafi in the Darwaz-e-Kandahar area, seriously injuring him.
The cleric was rushed to the Khwaja Abdullah hospital, where he died of his wounds, police spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok News.
He said police had launched their investigation to identify and arrest the killers.
Hospital sources said one of Najafi’s bodyguards was also wounded in the attack. Najafi was a former member of the Herat provincial council.
No group has so far asserted responsibility for his murder.
