Fuel & sugar down, gold up in Kabul

KABUL (Pajhwok): The prices of fuel, wood and sugar decreased in Kabul markets during the ongoing week when the rates of gold edged up, dealers said on Thursday.

Abdul Saboor, a filling station worker in Wazirabad area, told Pajhwok Afghan News the price of one litre of petrol decreased from 58 afghanis to 56afs.

Similarly, he said, the rate of one litre of diesel fell from 55afs to 53afs. He linked the fall to decreasing rates in international markets.

The price of firewood also came down. A seller in Kabul city Chaman Babrak said the price of per 560 kilograms of peeled oak decreased from 7,000afs to 6,500afs.

The price of gas has remained unchanged during the ongoing week. Mohammad Sharif, a dealer in Taimani area, sold one kilogram of liquefied gas for 65afs.

In food items, the price of sugar decreased. Food Traders’ Union head Fazlur Rahman said the price of a 50kg bag of Pakistani sugar declined from 1,750afs to 1,720afs.

But other items, he said, remained steady as a 24kg bag of rice sold for 1,700afs, 50kg flour for 1,300afs, 16 litres of Momin ghee for 1,070afs, 1kg of black tea for 210afs and the same amount of green tea for 180afs.

But a retailer in the Dahan-i-Bagh area of Kabul, Khan Ali, sold a 49-kg bag of flour for 1,400afs, a 50-kg sack of sugar for 1,900afs and a 24-kg bag of rice for 2,200afs.

He sold a 16-kg tin of Momin ghee for 460afs, a kilo of African black tea for 260afs and the same quantity of green tea for 230afs — higher than wholesale prices.

The price of gold jumped up during the ongoing week. Mohammad Fawad, a jeweler on Timor Shahi road, said the value of one gram of Arabian gold jumped up from 1,950afs to 2,000afs.

He said the same quantity of the Iranian variety was sold for 1,650afs against its last week’s rate of 1,600afs.

Moneychanger Ahmad Shah said the buying rate of one US dollar was 57.95afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 562afs. Last week’s exchange value of the dollar stood at 58afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 564afs.
