KUNDUZ CITY/FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A Taliban commander has been detained and an arms dump seized in northeastern Kunduz and Badakhshan provinces, officials said on Thursday.
Kunduz police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Saboor Nasrati, told Pajhwok Afghan News Mullah Abdul Ghayr, the militant commander who was involved in planting bombs and armed attacks in Khanabad district, was detained this morning.
He said Ghayur — also known as Abbas — was accused of killing several civilians. The commander has reportedly confessed to killing a number of people as part of what he perceived as jihad.
Ghayur has also been linked to killing 13 members of an Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander Mohammad Omar Aqtash’s family in a roadside bombing last year.
According to another report, an arms depot was discovered in the Tagab district of Badakhshan province. Senior security official Gen. Rahmanuddin Rahman said 91 boxes of machine-gun bullets and five boxes of bombs and rocket launchers were seized.
He said a suspect named Mullah Qadir was arrested in connection with the arms seizure.
