Ghani condemns Prophet Mohammad’s cartoons

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghan government on Saturday condemned the republication of blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

President Ashraf Ghani said the freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly to create a peaceful environment for coexistence and understanding among followers of different faiths.

Publishing such caricatures was an insult to Islam and provocative to Muslims, he said in a statement. “The freedom of expression doesn’t mean insulting others; it should be used for better understanding and coexistence,” Ghani argued.

He added Afghanistan has suffered greater violence than any other country and its people best appreciated the need for peaceful coexistence.

Charlie Hebdo republished the sacrilegious drawings after an armed attack on its office left 12 cartoonists dead. An Al Qaeda group in Yemen claimed responsibility for that attack.
