WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, agreeing on stronger ties Afghanistan is building in the region.
“The discussion focused on the stronger ties Afghanistan is building in the region, as well as the importance of trade and economic development,” a UN statement said after Ghani’s first visit to the UN as president.
Consideration was given to the need to respond to humanitarian challenges regarding displaced persons and refugees in the region and the importance of Afghan-led and owned peace and reconciliation talks, the statement said.
During the talks, Ban underlined the historical relationship between Afghanistan and the United Nations and reiterated the organisation’s continuing commitment to supporting the Afghan government and people.
In Kabul, the Presidential Palace said Ghani updated the UN chief on the overall security envronment in the country, particularly against the backdrop of regional diplomatic efforts for Afghan-led reconciliation.
