Fuel prices steady in Kabul despite international cut

The price of a barrel of crude oil on January 5 was $37.81, but dropped to $30.56 a barrel on January 15.

After the lifting of international sanctions against Iran, the price of a barrel of the commodity went down and Thursday’s price of the commodity stood at $27.68 a barrel.

However, a fuel station worker in Shahri Ara area of Kabul, Ghulam Sakhi, said fuel prices remained unchanged during the outgoing week.

Sakhi sold a liter of petrol for 44 afghanis and the same quantity of diesel for 37 afghanis.

Liquefied gas prices were different in different areas. Mohammad Sharif, a gas seller in Taimani area, sold a kilogram of the commodity for 45afs, the same price as last week’s.

But Sayed Mohammad, a resident of Qarghai area, said the price of a kilogram of liquiefied gas hovered between 45afs and 40afs in his area. “I purchased a kilogram of gas for 40afs yesterday,” he said.

In food items, the rates of sugar and ghee decreased. Food Traders Union head, Fazal Rahman, said that the price of a 49kg bag of Pakistani sugar decreased from 1,970afs to 1,900afs.

He said the price of a 16-litre of Momin ghee tin dropped from 970afs to 950afs.

But other essential items’ rates remained unchanged. Rahman said 49kg of flour cost 1,440afs, 25kg of rice 1,650afs, registerin no change in their prices compared to last week.

Fazl Ahmad, a tea wholesaler in Kabul Market, said that one kilogram of black African tea was sold for 240afs and the same amount of Madina green tea for 220afs.

But Qurban Ali, a reseller in Dahan-i-Bagh area, sold 49kg of sugar for 2,050afs, 50kg of Pakistani flour for 1,550afs, 24kg of rice for 1,900afs and 16 liters of Momin ghee for 1,050afs.

Mohammad Fawad, a jeweller in Timor Shahi neighbourhood, said the gold prices saw no changes. One gram of the Arabian gold was sold for 2,100afs and the same quantity of the Russian variety for 1,700afs.

According to Sadaqat Exchange Services, the buying rate of one US dollar was 68.60afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 637afs. Last week’s exchange value of the dollar stood at 68.60afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 638afs.
