KABUL (Pajhwok): Prominent American lawmakers are set to unveil a new bill on Wednesday (today) seeking a renewal of the special immigration programme for Afghans.
John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Jack Reed, a ranking Democrat; Jeanne Shaheen and Thom Tillis will introduce the legislation.
The Special Immigrant Visa program lets Afghans, including interpreters who assisted the US military, to seek refuge in America. The US embassy in Kabul has stopped interviewing applicants.
According to POLITICO magazine, the proposed legislation will allow 2,500 new applicants for a possible 11,000 immigrants under the programme.
