MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Atta Mohammad Noor, the governor of northern Balkh province, on Saturday reiterated his intention to resign in the near future, saying the president had asked him to delay his decision.

Addressing the opening ceremony here for the new academic year, also attended by President Ashraf Ghani, Noor said he would stand down as governor but would not leave the province.

The governor promised staying in the province to monitor the performance of his successor, pledging not to let him do anything wrong. Without giving an exact date, Noor said he would resign in the near future.

However, President Ghani asked the governor not talk about his resignation as Balkh people would not be happy with such a decision. “We would discuss it later in a relaxed environment,” the president commented.

Ghani gave the governor full credit for his dedicated work to develop the province. ‘Noor had always pleaded with Kabul for the progress of the province, not for personal favours, he said.
