LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A US airstrike ‘mistakenly’ killed 16 Afghan police in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province on Friday, officials said.
Hayatullah Hayat, the Helmand governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News the airstrike targeted the police who had freshly captured an area from the Taliban in the troubled town.
He said police suffered casualties in the mistaken airstrike, but provided no figures.
Greshk police chief Mohammad Ismail Khpalwak said a number of policemen were killed in the strike.
Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, said the post was manned by 18 personnel. As a result of the airstrike, two commanders were among 16 police killed and two others wounded.
The American forces acknowledged their airstrike mistakenly targeted a police post in Helmand.
In an email response, the US forces said they were in contact with the Afghan forces and the incident was being investigated.
