KABUL (Pajhwok): In the presence of President Ashraf Ghani, the Afghan government for the first time observed the 40th death anniversary of former president Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan in Kabul on Friday.
Sardar Daud was killed along with his family in a communist-backed military coup in 1979. Speaking at the anniversary held at the Afghanistan Radio and Television (RTA), President Ghani said president Daud and his family were victims of the first coup, the effects of which were still felt.
He called Ghazi Amanullah Khan and Sardar Daud as the two great personalities of Afghanistan in the 20th century. Ghani said the message of Daud for the youth of Afghanistan was love and patriotism. He said the Afghans should reach the consensus to fulfill the unfulfilled mission of Daud and Amanullah Khan until 2047.
The president called for realization of the hopes of Sardar Daud in line with the country’s constitution in order to rebuild the country, which was a demand of all the people.
Ghani said peace was the basic demand of the Afghanistan people. In this regard there was consensus and no hurdle in the peace process was acceptable, he added. The Afghan leader said stability, peace and prosperity could be achieved only through the constitution.
About Daud Khan, Ghani said he was pure soul. “He considered the Baitul Mall as the nation’s wealth. Nothing is available to say he misused public assets.”
