Pending police salaries to be paid soon, promises MoI

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Thursday acknowledged non-payment of salaries to some policemen due to biometric system but assured the delayed salaries would be issued from special fund soon.

Earlier, a report in New York Times said that around 30,000 Afghan police officers fighting a bloody war against the Taliban have been denied their modest salaries for months.

MOI spokesman Najibullah Danish disagreed with the number of policemen mentioned in the Times report, who had been denied salaries.

“These policemen are not paid salaries because they are yet to go through the biometric system and this process has been underway over the past few months,” he said.

Most policemen have completed the biometric process while those fighting in far-flung areas had not been able to complete the process, said Danish.

The MoI has directed the Finance Ministry to issue the pending salaries from a separate fund and the amount would be returned when their biometric was completed.
