Khalilzad ‘capable’ to break Afghan stalemate: Senate

KABUL or Senate on Tuesday asked regional countries to cooperate with US Special Envoy for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmai Khalizad in his efforts to break the Afghan peace impasse.

Upper house member Mir Bahadur Wasafi called Khalilzad a worldwide famous personality and said: “Besides his deep knowledge regarding issues Afghanistan is faced with Khalilzad is fully aware of the policies of neighboring countries, it make him highly important and effective for Afghan reconciliation.”

Lawmaker Bakhtar Aminzai said demanded Khalilzad to be invited to the Meshrano Jirga to share information regarding the Afghanistan peace process.

Jumma Din Gayabnwal, another lawmaker, said Khalilzad should meet with Afghan people, ulema, influential personalities in different provinces and hear their demands and suggestions regarding the peace process.

He said the Taliban be pressured more to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.

Sentor Mualvi Muhiuddin Munsif welcomed Khalilzad efforts regarding the Afghan reconciliation process and added: “Pakistan should use all its pressure on Taliban and force their ulema and religious personalities to convince the Taliban for talks with the Afghan government,” he said.

Senate Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said: “Khalilzad will travel to five countries with the solo purpose to advance the Afghan reconciliation process.”

He stressed that a clear discussion should take place with regional actors in order to find a way out of the conflict and Khalilzad was capable of breaking the stalemate.
