PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The textile factory in northern Baghlan province has thousands of active machines but the plant has not been operating since last 15 years due to government’s negligence, officials claimed Tuesday.

Ghulam Qadir Khan, the Baghlan textile factory head, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had discussed with Uzbekistan the reactivation of the factory.

He said: “We have around 1,000 active machines at the factory, but these machines were old, we cannot use them. But now we want the factory to go operation with Uzbekistan’s cooperation.”

Qadir suggested the Afghan government should stop importing foreign cloths to the country to provide an opportunity for the development of domestic production in this regard.

He said the factory’s activation would create job opportunities for thousands of people.

Abdul Razeq, an employee of the factory, told Pajhwok he has been working in the factory for the past 40 years.

He said, “Around 5,000 individuals would work in the past in the factory but now only few people remain to take care of the machines.”

He said he had served in the factory at tough times and complained why the government was not serious in protecting the national asset.

Khwaja Mohammad Nazir, another worker of the factory, told Pajhwok: “Right now all machines in the factory are useable but I don’t know why the government is not taking practically steps in this regard.”

Governor Ahmad Farid Basim about the relevant issue said efforts were underway to reactivate all factories, including the textile one, in the province in near future.

He said the government had talked with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and China about the Baghlan textile factory and hoped the plant would start operating soon.
