FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The security forces regained control of the Warduj district of northeastern Badakhshan province after three years on Saturday, an official said.
Nek Mohammad Nazari, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces recaptured the district at 10am.
He said currently the forces were establishing check-posts to maintain security in the troubled district. The official did not give further details.
Acting Defense Minister Asadullah Khalid tweeted: “Security forces were able to regain control of Warduj from Taliban insurgents in the morning.”
Meanwhile, MoD said in a statement that around 100 insurgents, including shadow governor for Badakhshan Qari Fasihuddin and military commander Qari Hafiz, were killed during the operation for reclaiming the district.
It said the security forces suffered no casualties during the raid. Pajhwok tried to contact the Taliban for comment but failed.
Seen as a strategic town, Warduj borders Jurm, Baharak, Ishkashim, Zibak and Shuhada districts
