EU supports transparent, credible election

KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Union (EU) on Thursday said that win for any candidate during recent presidential polls should be based on transparency, fairness and legitimacy.

A statement from the office of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met with the EU’s special representative for Afghanistan, Ronald Kobia in his office today (Thursday).

Kobia congratulated CEO on the presidential election conducted successfully and said, “The EU as explained in its statements supports transparency in the election, we want transparency and credibility of this process and the winning of anyone in this election should be based on transparency and legitimacy,”

He said that peace in Afghanistan was a priority for the EU and the union supported efforts for a stable peace in this country.Kobia assured EU’s continued support to Afghanistan.

CEO Dr. Abdullah Abdullah appreciated the EU’s assistance to Afghanistan and welcomed the union’s stance about transparency in the Afghan election process.

He said that transparency and credibility of the election was vital for Afghanistan.

Abdullah also thanked the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and the international community for supporting election only based on biometric votes for prevention of fraud in the process.

“We trust on a transparent and credible election and will not hesitate any efforts for a clean and fraud-free poll,” he said.

About peace efforts, he said, “Peace is a priority of the Afghan people and myself, I explained my position about this during election campaigns, peace is a priority for us in any processes and we welcome a permanent and dignified peace,”
