KABUL Cricket Board (ACB), struggling with the Covid-10 crisis, has decided to slash coaching staff salaries by a quarter in May.

“This is part of our cost-saving strategy as we have been also impacted by the Covid-19 crisis,” the ACB chief executive said in an interview on Monday.

ESPNcricinfo quoted Lutfullah Stanikzai as saying that the board had decided to cut 50 percent of salaries for June if international cricket did not resume.

Lance Klusener and HD Ackermann, the head coach and batting coach respectively, as well as assistant coach Nawroz Mangal will have their salaries reduced.

The pay cut may rise to to 50 percent next month if Afghanistan’s tour of Zimbabwe is postponed. The salaries of contracted players could also be reviewed soon.

The ACB will take a final decision on the Zimbabwe tour after resumes overseas air travel. The board will also review salaries of players — 32 senior cricketers and 55 domestic players.

Staninkzai said the board had received half of its distribution costs — about $ 2.4million — for 2020 from the ICC.

The ACB revenue sharply fell after the Alokozay Group of Companies (AGC) scrapped its contract last year as a result of differences.

An India-based firm called Tyka, a clothes sponsor, has also cancelled its two-year contract with ACB. The agreement was valid until the end of 2020.

With coronavirus-related restrictions still in place, the Afghan government has not yet released the annual grant to the board — around 15% of its revenue.

“For smaller cricketing nations like us and Ireland it is not easy to manage everything with the amount of money that we receive from ICC,” he remarked.
