Ghani, Khalilzad discuss intra-Afghan talks, ceasefire

 

KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and politicians have discussed peace process, reduction in violence, ceasefire and future peace steps with US Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Wednesday.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday afternoon held a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Process Zalmay Khalilzad in Kabul, the statement said.

During the meeting both dignitaries discussed future steps related to peace and reconciliation in the country.

Khalilzad briefed the president regarding his recent trips to Pakistan thought available opportunities.”

Both sides stressed over reduction in violence or unannounced ceasefire ahead of intra-Afghan talks.

Khalilzad added: “Regional countries, international community and international organisations were ready to support Afghanistan’s efforts for peace in the country.”

During the meeting President Ashraf Ghani said Afghan political leaders had developed consensus and defended democracy with one voice. Afghan leaders are committed to end the ongoing conflict and establish honorable peace in the country.

“We are thankful that the international community and friendly countries support peace process in Afghanistan,” said Ghani.
