CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Flash floods triggered by heavy rains killed and wounded 214 people in the worst-hit central Parwan province, with another 250 people missing, an official said Friday.
The devastating floods wreaked havoc in Charikar, the provincial capital, and Bagram, Jabal Saraj and Salang districts of the province on Thursday.
The Parwan governor’s spokesman, Waheed Shahkar, told Pajhwok that the floods left 103 dead and 111 others wounded.
He said another 250 people were missing and buried under debris and efforts were underway to retrieve their bodies.
Local officials in Parwan said the flash floods destroyed about 1000 homes.
Ten scout teams have been tasked with finding bodies and were able to find one or two dead bodies within half an hour. The teams today found the body of a two-year old boy.
Naveedullah, a resident, said his father remained buried in the debris and his other family members were rescued.
The 18-year-old said about 300 people remained buried under debris and the scout teams were unable to find bodies.
Some of the victims said no aid had reached them so far.
A resident of Massoud township said his home was completely destroyed in the flooding and he had received no aid so far.
The governor’s spokesman said the public and private sector had dispatched assistance for the victims and some had received the aid and others would receive it soon.
