KABUL (Pajhwok): The Shaheen Asmayee Football Club clinched the Afghan Premier League (APL) title for the fifth time on Friday when they outplayed Simorgh Alborz in a closely-contested final.
Shaheen Asmayee scored a solitary goal in the action-packed encounter involving a number of attacks by both sides. But a first-half goal by Fardin Hakimi saw Shaheen Asmayee dry and home.
Unfortunately for the runners-up, a goal scored in the first half was declared illegal as the player was found offside. Five minutes, Simorgh failed to capitalise on another opportunity.
In the second half, the finalists made several spectacular moves, but could score no more goals. Shaheen Asmayee won the title for the first win came in 2014.
Eight teams — Shaheen Asmayee, De Maiwand Atalan, Toofan Harirod, Simorgh Alborz, Mawjhai Amu, De Spinghar Bazan, De Abasin Sape, and Oqaban Hindukush — contested the eighth edition of APL.
First Vice President Amrullah Saleh, High Council for National Reconciliation Chairman Abdullah Abdullah and a number of VIPs watched the final amidst tight security.
