KABUL (Pajhwok): Nearly 3,000 violence against women cases, including 259 sexual attacks, 137 murder and 166 physical torture and disability, have been registered and addressed nationwide this ongoing solar year, the Attorney General Office (AGO) said on Tuesday.

The country’s top prosecution body in a statement said the cases addressed included 1,501 incidents of torture, 260 disgrace, 257 harassment, 98 suicide and self-immolation, 23 adultery, 29 forced marriage and 260 relevant incidents of violence against the gender.

Of the total 2,990 cases, 2,176 cases were investigated in provinces and 327 persons awarded punishment and 338 others imposed cash fines, the AGO said.

According to the AGO, of the total cases , 814 cases were registered in Kabul, 430 in Balkh, 303 in Herat, 430 in Balkh, 128 in Badakhshan, 119 in Daikundi, 114 in Nangarhar, 107 in Bamyan and from two to 94 in other provinces.

The surge in number of violence against women incidents did not mean an increase in violence against women but it proves that victims now have greater access to justice and they refer their cases to AGO.
