Afghanistan’s Covid-19 tally tops 53,000

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 102 new positive COVID-19 cases and nine deaths from the infection have been recorded in 14 provinces in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health said on Monday.

The ministry said 1,575 people underwent tests during the past 24 hours and the virus was detected in 102 people, pushing the overall tally to 53,011.

Of the fresh cases, 53 were recorded in Herat, 13 in Takhar, seven in Kabul, seven in Kandahar, five in Kapisa, four in Ghazni, three in Nangarhar, two each in Baghlan, Nimroz and Kunar and one each in Balkh, Helmand, Ghor and Sar-e-Pul provinces.

At least 125 individuals recovered from the pandemic during the past 24 hours, taking the recoveries to 42,530.

The ministry said seven people lost their lives to the virus during the period and the total deaths reached 2,237.

Initially emerged in Wuhan province of China, the virus then spread throughout the world. The US and Britain have been reporting a large number of infections on a daily basis.

Lately many countries closed their borders and delayed all types of travel in order to prevent the spread of the virus despite producing vaccines by many countries across.

MoPH urged people to reduce travelling and also requested home quarantine in case of any visible symptoms.

The ministry has announced that the second wave of the pandemic has begun in the country and people should follow the virus preventive guidelines.
