Feeling insecure: Some Nangarhar journalists quit jobs

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Journalists in eastern Nangarhar province say they have been feeling more insecure after the assassination of Malala Maiwand and some colleagues have quitted their job.

They ask the government and militants not to target journalists because they raise the voices of masses and remain neutral in the government and Taliban conflict.

The journalists expressed these views during a gathering organized by the Journalists Safety Committee (JSC) in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, on Tuesday.

Sher Shah Hamdard, JSC Nangarhar chapter head, termed the journalists reservations as valid and demanded the government pay head to the problems and difficulties being faced by media workers.

He said four incidents of violence, including one murder, happened against journalists in Nangarhar last month.

The journalists also complained the government did not address their problems and as a result some journalists quitted their jobs.

Enakas TV Reporter Safeer Ahmad said after the assassination of their colleague Malala, most of their staff members resigned and some continued to work in an environment of fear.

It is worth mentioning that seven journalists were killed in November and December last year in different provinces of Afghanistan.
