KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan and Ireland are all poised to face off the first of a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi today (Thursday).

The ODI series opener marks Afghanistan’s return to International cricket after a 10-month hiatus. They last played against Ireland in March 2020.

The UAE had earlier refused to issue the visas to the Afghans, prompting suggestions for a new venue in Oman. However, Ireland rejected the proposal.

However, the Gulf state later agreed to let the Afghan cricketers come to the UAE. The two teams subsequently agreed on new dates.

As they square off today, both sides will go flat out to boost their standing ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Ireland.

In a warm-up match on Saturday, Afghanistan chalked up a 22-run win over Ireland, who are desperate to up their game.

The series is important for the Irish who have fixed their eyes on making it to the 2023 World Cup in India. The three matches are part of the Cricket World Cup Super League.
