Interim govts have triggered civil wars: Ghani

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani says interim governments have failed in the countries where they were established and caused civil wars and bloodshed there.

A statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News states Ghani made the remarks I his virtual address to the Aspen Security Forum on Friday evening.

According to the statement, the president highlighted current challenges, foreign policy issues and the national security situation during his speech.

With regard to the interim government idea, the president warned the creation of a government of this kind would cause bloodshed in Afghanistan.

Pointing to the civil strife in the 1990s in Afghanistan, Ghani said that though the plan for the interim government had been a failure, triggering wars.

On Friday,Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai told a news conference in Russia that Ghani should resign to facilitate the peace process.

However, the Presidential Palace said the constitution explained the president’s authority and that he would transfer power only to an elected president.

“They (Taliban) should implement the peace agreement they have signed with the US. The US and NATO should be in a strong position, considering the situations,” Ghani remarked.
