JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A campaign to plant 5000 trees in schools was launched across eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday.
The campaign was jointly launched by the agriculture and education departments of Nangarhar province.
Local officials say 5,000 saplings would be planted in various schools under “My school, My plants” campaign and students would be given the responsibility of looking after one plant each.
The tree plantation campaign began from Nangarhar High School in Jalalabad city and would be extended to schools in Jalalabad city and districts of the province.
Nangarhar director of Education, Hasibullah Shinwari said they started the plantation process after signing an agreement with Nangarhar department of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.
He said earlier too saplings had been planted in schools but the plants would dry due to negligence but this year students would be given the responsibility of protecting one plant each.
Nangarhar Agriculture Director Inamullah Safi said they had provided the Department of Education with 5,000 plants from their nurseries.
He added 2.3 million fruit bearing sapling and other saplings were grown by private sector and 228,000 saplings by the agriculture department.
Governor Ziaulhaq Amarkhil said such activities not only prevent pollution but also helped students recognize their responsibilities.
He added the Nangarhar Agriculture department will sign agreements with various departments in order to properly grow and protect the saplings.
