KABUL (Pajhwok): Moscow believes New Delhi’s deeper involvement in consultations on bringing stability to Afghanistan is natural.

“Russia has always stated that India plays a very important role in Afghanistan,” the Russian embassy in New Delhi said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, reported by The Economic Times, India’s eventual deeper involvement in dedicated dialogue formats was natural.

Russo-Indian talks on international and regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan, had always been close and forward-looking, the embassy added.

The statement came hours after The Indian Express reported that Delhi was finally on the table with five other countries to evolve a roadmap for peace in Afghanistan.

The newspaper called India’s readiness to be part of such discussions the result of six months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy. The mechanism was proposed by the US.

“Due to the complexity of the Afghan settlement, moving toward a relevant regional consensus and coordination with other partners, including the US, is critical,” the embassy said.

It added: “We proceed from the importance of the implementation of the US-Taliban agreement signed in Doha in February 2020 and approved by a UN Security Council resolution.”

Media reports indicate Russia, China, the US, Pakistan and Iran should join hands to promote peace in Afghanistan. Pakistan, which has always opposed India’s role any roadmap for the region, also seems to have changed its position.
