KABUL (Pajhwok): The Midwives Association on Tuesday said only 6,000 midwives out of the total 34,000 were on job and the remaining were unemployed.

The association head, Zahra Merzaee, marking the International Day of Midwives (IDM), told reporters here that if midwives were provided quality training and job, the country’s health system would witness drastic improvement.

She said 6,000 out of 34,000 midwives were employed in the country’s health system while the remaining 28,000 were unemployed or serving in other disciplines.

“It is very easy to invest on midwives and the entire nation reaps the benefit,” she said.

According to Merzaee, midwives served the people against trivial benefits in the country, asking for more privileges for them to improve their living standards.

“I know many midwives who are unemployed, they cooperate with patients every time particularly during child birth, they are really helpful for mothers. Government should provide necessary support to midwives,” she said.

Acting Health Minister Waheedullah Majroh said that midwives and volunteers are the backbone of health system and their role is effective.

“We are trying to facilitate midwives and improve the capacity and elevate the midwives department in the ministry.”

He asked health workers to behave in a better way with patients and noted that midwives played central role in reducing child and mother mortality rates.
