PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Civilised Taliban leaders will choose talks over war after decade of instability in Afghanistan, believes Pakistan’s interior minister.

Sheikh Rashid Ahmed called dialogue the best option for all Afghans, who were tired of violence, civil war and invasions by foreign forces.

Pakistan would accept any government in the neighbouring country that had the support of the Afghan people, the minister told reporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Sunday.

Rashid urged all stakeholders in Afghanistan to enter dialogue on an inclusive political settlement to prevent their country from slipping into another round of civil war.

The interior minister insisted: “Dialogue with Taliban will be in the interest of all. We will always support peace in Afghanistan,” he promised.

“If China wants to invest 400 billion dollars in Iran, it will not be possible without peace in Afghanistan,” Rashid remarked, while underlining regional stability.

In the absence of stability in Afghanistan, Pakistan would be unable launch a train service with Uzbekistan, the minister added.

With the fencing of the Durand Line, a project opposed by Kabul, he claimed Pakistan was in a better position in terms of security.
