Hundreds of families receive food aid in Paktia

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Over a thousand families in Syed Karam district of southeastern Paktia province received food aid on Wednesday, an official said.

The assistance that included eight different food items has been provided by the World Food Program (WFP).

Haji Hafiz, Syed Karam district chief, talking to Pajhwok Afghan News, said “The aid includes flour, rice, beans, pulses and other food items which were distributed to 1,100 needy families in the district.”

He thanked WFP for helping the people in difficult economic situation and said international aid agencies should provide more assistance to people suffering from poverty before the winter arrives.

On the other hand, people who received the aid, were happy for the help and said that the district’s residents were affected during conflicts and they were in need of relief assistance.

One of them, Akhtar Mohammad said, “In the past months, there had been heavy fighting in the district, hundreds of families fled to other areas and lost their jobs and businesses.”

He said foreign charity organizations should pay more attention to the condition of their people and the government should also create job opportunities for the public.

It is the first time a charity organization has donated food to the people of Paktia since the Taliban administration.
