JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Nomads, locally known as Kuchis, in eastern Nangarhar province fear drought and lack of pastures have forced them to sell their livestock at throwaway prices.
Saidu Kuchi, who brought his livestock to Jalalabad for sale, told Pajhwok Afghan News drought this year had forced them to sell their animals at very low prices.
He alleged many grazing lands in the province had been usurped by strongmen, something that has affected the Kuchi community.
Another nomad in the Wach Tangi area of Behsud district, confirmed: “Many pastures in Nangarhar have been grabbed and their livestock badly affected by drought.”
Ajmal Subhani, spokesman for the Agriculture Department, said efforts were ongoing in coordination with security organs to reclaim the grabbed lands.
