Logar schools face shortage of teachers, textbooks

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The education sector in central Logar province has been badly affected by the non-availability of textbooks, an official said on Monday.

Education Director Mohammad Shapur Arab told Pajhwok Afghan News there was a need for textbooks and professional teachers to improve the vital sector in the province.

He said: “Our biggest problems are the lack of professional teachers and textbooks. We need to hire 800 teachers in Logar, where 40 percent of students don’t have textbooks.”

According to Arab, he has requested the Ministry of Education to hire more schoolteachers and provide books to students.

He warned if the ministry did not appoint more teachers or failed to provide books for students, schools in some districts would be closed.

Meanwhile, students have urged the Ministry of Education to resolve their problems.

A student of the Shahi Kala High School in Pul-i-Alam said there had been a shortage of teachers and books last year as well. As a result, he complained, their education was adversely affected.

He urged the ministry to address their problems, otherwise, they would face similar problems this year too.

Syed Hamid, head of the Parents Council of Kolangar High School, said the government was responsible for recruiting teachers, meeting scholastic needs, like textbooks.

He added: “We visited the Education Department to register our complaints regarding the lack of teachers and books. The officials concerned acknowledged the problems and now it should be addressed.”

Logar has 276 schools, where 136,000 students, including 40,000 girls, are imparted education by 3,525 teachers. Officials and students say there is need for hiring more teachers.
